Nasal vaccines stepping stone to bring down covid: WHO

Geneva: The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Wednesday that the nasal Covid-19 vaccines could bring the pandemic to reigns. This was after indigenous vaccines of the same kind were approved in India and China, PTI reported.

Though WHO welcomed the nasal vaccines, it also stated that it wanted to see the data behind the vaccines, to decide whether to approve them.

On Sunday, China launched the world's first inhalable vaccine against Covid-19, Convidecia Air. The vaccine is made by CanSino Biologics and jabbed through a nebuliser.

On Tuesday, India approved a nasally-administered Covid-19 vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech for emergency use.

According to WHO emergencies director Mike Ryan, nasal vaccines generate an immune response in the respiratory mucosa in the lungs. It is where the virus enters and causes a lot of damage, he said.

He referred to how the combination of nasal and injectable vaccines was used to combat polio, fully protecting the internal systems. The opportunity of reducing the severity as well as the further transmission will offer a stronger grab on Covid-19, Ryan opined.

He praised the nasal vaccines saying that it would be a stepping stone for second and third generations. It would give a total end to the pandemic and help to deal with future respiratory virus threats, he said.
