New Delhi: A 44-year-old professor from Kolkata was found dead with his hand and throat slit in a hotel in Uttarakhand, NDTV reported.
Police said that Mainak Pal teaching at Jadavpur University in Kolkata may have died by suicide.
Pal traveled to Uttarakhand with two friends but decided to return to Kolkata while his friends stayed back.
It is reported that he told his friends that he wanted to go home because he was missing his daughter.
But Professor Pal checked into a hotel in Lalkuan, rather than boarding a train home the following morning.
His family tried to reach him over the phone on Friday evening and eventually called up the hotel.
The hotel staff broke open the door to his room discovering Pal’s body with deep cuts on his hand and neck.
Expressing shock at the professor’ death, the Jadavpur University Teachers' Association said Pal left a deep imprint on them.
‘We are in deep shock since we heard about his death’, Partha Pratim Roy, the general secretary of the teachers' body, was quoted as saying, adding that he was a ‘lovable person’ and was ‘popular among students and the fraternity’.
Mainak Pal, an alumnus of Presidency College, Kolkata, joined Jadavpur University in 2022 as an associate professor.
Pal is survived by his wife, daughter and parents.
