Thrissur: Teacher booked over alleged hate remark on Onam

Thrissur: A school teacher has been booked for allegedly making hate remarks in connection with Onam celebrations in the central Kerala district of Thrissur, police said on Wednesday.

The case was registered against the woman teacher of a private school in Kadavallur on Tuesday, following a complaint lodged by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI).

According to the complaint, the teacher recently shared a voice message in a school-related WhatsApp group, stating that there is no need to celebrate Onam in the institution as it is a festival of another religion, police said.

"The case was registered under Section 192 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) of the Indian Penal Code. An investigation is ongoing, and any further action is yet to be taken," a police officer said.

The incident also triggered protests against the school, the police added.
