Kochi: The Rotary International Club has chosen Sr. Heleena Alby Principal of St. Rita's Public School, Palluruthy, for ’Best Principal' award, days after hijab controversy involving her raged in the state, News 18 reported.
A controversy erupted a fortnight ago when an eightth grader went to school wearing a hijab along with her uniform.
The school management came out against the student for wearing the hijab with school Principal Sr. Heleena Alby emphatically explaining to the media the school’s stand, triggering a debate. And viewers of her televised interaction with the media also had taken a dim view of the way she conducted herself while talking on the issue, including her unconvincing communication.
The Rotary Club International Thiruvananthapuram has picked Sr Heleena Alby for the award even as the state is still reeling from the chaotic debate over the hijab.
However, Club secretary J. Moses reportedly said that Sister Heleena is chosen for the award among its excellence awards, based on her activities in the field, rather than the controversies.
The club secretary added that Sister Heleena was selected from suggestions it previously received, adding that the award will be presented to her at a function in Thiruvananthapuram next month.
