SFI complains to President over Kerala Governor’s ‘BJP’ Instagram handle

Thiruvananthapuram: The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has approached President Droupadi Murmu, alleging that Kerala Governor Om Prakash Mathur’s use of the BJP’s name in his official Instagram handle raises questions about the political neutrality of his constitutional office.

In an email complaint, SFI Thiruvananthapuram district secretary Nandan M A said the Governor’s social media username, ‘ommathurbjp’, indicated an association with a political party and was inconsistent with the impartiality expected of a constitutional authority.

The student organisation argued that a Governor must uphold the Constitution and remain independent of party politics. It also expressed concern that such an association could undermine public confidence in constitutional institutions.

Referring to Mathur’s previous roles in the BJP, including his tenure in party positions, the SFI urged the President to intervene to protect the dignity and political neutrality of the Governor’s office. The Lok Bhavan has not yet responded to the complaint.

Mathur took oath as the 29th Governor of Kerala on October 23, succeeding Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who was appointed Governor of Tamil Nadu.

Originally from Bedal village in Rajasthan’s Pali district, Mathur graduated from Rajasthan University and began his public life as an RSS pracharak. He later served as the BJP’s general secretary in charge of Gujarat and represented Rajasthan in the Rajya Sabha.
