Pathanamthitta: Following a viral image of Kerala policemen standing on the 'Pathinettam Padi' (18 steps) of the revered Sabarimala temple, 23 officers were instructed on Wednesday to undergo intensive training. The image, which sparked controversy for violating temple traditions, showed the policemen in uniform with their backs to the sanctum sanctorum, a move condemned by devotees and religious followers of Lord Ayyappa.
The incident occurred after the temple doors were closed for the day, as per the temple’s customary practices. The policemen, stationed at the temple to manage crowds, were pictured in front of the sanctum sanctorum, an act that violates the temple's long-standing traditions. Devotees expressed their outrage, leading to a swift response from the authorities.
In response to the backlash, the Kerala Police announced that the 23 officers would report to the training division in Kannur for rigorous training. However, the duration of the training has not yet been disclosed.
The controversy has escalated, with the Kerala High Court’s Devasom Bench having already expressed its displeasure over the use of mobile phones near the sanctum sanctorum. The police are expected to submit an Action Taken Report to the court by Thursday.
The Sabarimala temple, located in the Western Ghats, is a significant pilgrimage site that follows strict rituals. The temple traditionally prohibits the entry of women of menstruating age and requires devotees to undertake a 41-day penance before visiting the shrine. The incident has added to the ongoing debates regarding the temple's traditions and modern practices.
