Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, in his capacity as Chancellor, has appointed P Raveendran, a professor in the university's Department of Chemistry, as the Vice Chancellor of Calicut University. After the tenure of the current Vice Chancellor, P Jayaraj, ended on Friday, Raveendran took charge
in the presence of Registrar Dr EK Satheesh and members of the versity Syndicate and Senate.
A notification from Raj Bhavan stated that until a permanent appointment is made to the position, Raveendran will exercise the authority and carry out the responsibilities of Vice-Chancellor.
Sources claim that the Governor assigned Raveendran the VC responsibility after disregarding a panel of three professors’ nominations put forward by the state government.
Calicut University Physics Professor PP Pradyumnan, Kerala University Hindi Professor Jayachandran R and KU English professor Meena T Pillai were reportedly on the panel that Higher Education Minister R Bindu recommended.
Following the Supreme Court's ruling that the government cannot interfere with vice chancellor appointments, Khan selected a professor of his own choice to assume the role of VC, disregarding the government's recommendation.
