Kannur: Dr Ram, the prime accused in the death of Azhikode Medical College student Nithin Raj, surrendered before the Crime Branch office in Kannur on Thursday after remaining absconding for nearly three months.
He had been taken into custody by the Crime Branch earlier this week, but was subsequently released after a court found that mandatory legal procedures had not been followed during the detention.
The Crime Branch has moved the court seeking permission to arrest Dr Ram again. Investigators believe he surrendered anticipating a favourable court order permitting his re-arrest. Officials are expected to formally record his arrest immediately after the court issues its decision.
The investigation has meanwhile been handed over to DySP Jeevan George. The Home Department reconstituted the probe team after the release of the accused triggered controversy, removing the earlier investigation team headed by the Kannur Crime Branch Superintendent of Police.
