Kollam: A 22-year-old college student was allegedly murdered in Kerala’s Kollam district by his sister’s former fiancé after she ended their engagement, police said on Tuesday.

The victim, Febin George Gomas, was attacked on Monday night by the accused, Thejas Raj, who was reportedly engaged to Gomas’s sister before the relationship was called off. According to local residents, the broken engagement may have led to the attack. However, police said they are still verifying the allegations as part of their investigation.

Raj allegedly arrived at the victim’s house wearing a purdah (veil) and carrying a knife along with petrol. “We are investigating how he obtained the petrol. The purdah was found discarded at the crime scene,” a police officer said.

Hours later, Raj was found dead on a railway track in Kadappakkada, seemingly run over by a train. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide. A car believed to have been used by Raj was also discovered near the tracks.

The investigation into the murder and the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death is ongoing, police said.
