Malappuram: A CPIM leader in Malappuram told his cheering supporters Sunday night that opposition party Muslim League was 'using women for votes' referring to women contesting in polls.
Sayed Ali Majeed who won the polls by a margin of 47 votes went on to make some crude remarks against women, courting controversy, NDTV reported.
He alleged that Muslim League ‘displayed women to win votes’ triggering cheers from his party workers.
Adding to misogynistic remarks, he said that ‘we also have married women at home... but not to show them off to win votes. Let them sit at home... marry women to sleep with and make kids’.
Explaining his prudish attitudes further, Sayed Ali Majeed said ‘That is why families traditionally verify lineage and background while arranging marriages...’
The election results came as a shocker for the ruling CPM-led LDF as the Opposition UDF bagged a surprising number of seats in the local polls.
The local polls are widely seen as a curtain-raiser for the upcoming Assembly polls next year as it has given indications of raging anti-incumbency in the state.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front won four of six municipal corporations, capturing Kochi and Kollam from the LDF, while retaining Kannur.
Giving further blow to the LDF, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance won control of the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram.
