Malayalam producer moves HC to block release of Hema Committee report

Kochi: Film producer Sajimon Parayil has filed a petition in the Kerala High Court to block the release of a redacted version of the Hema Committee Report, which has been withheld for over five years. The Hema Committee, established by the Pinarayi Vijayan government, was tasked with investigating the challenges faced by women actors and technicians in the film industry following the high-profile abduction and sexual assault of a renowned Malayalam actor in February 2017.

The committee, led by Justice K. Hema and including actor Sharada and former IAS officer K.B. Valsalakumari, was officially formed on July 1, 2017. After two years, it submitted its final report on December 31, 2019. The investigation cost the state government Rs 1.06 crore.

The 300-page report is believed to contain sensitive information about exploitation and harassment within the film industry, including evidence of a casting couch. Numerous individuals reportedly provided evidence, including audio clips and messages, to support their claims, The Week reported.
