Kerala human rights body mulls pre-marital counselling for college students

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Human Rights Commission is looking forward to providing pre-marital counseling to college students in the state.

The commission has directed the director of college education to submit within a month suggestions on counselling.

The human rights body’s decision comes in the wake of increasing cases of divorces and extramarital relationships.

K Baijunath, who is the acting chairperson and the commission's judicial member, said pre-marital counselling was the need of the hour.

‘The commission sought a report from the director of college education based on the proposal submitted by Varghese Mathew, a Professor at St Xavier's Arts and Science College in Kozhikode,’ he was quoted as saying.

The body said it is concerned about rapid dissolution of marriages and increasing human right violations related to it.

Increasing divorce litigation is giving stress to family courts requiring more courts, according to reports.
