Dakshina Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, a prominent body of Islamic scholars, urged the students and others involved in the controversy over the demand for a place to offer Namaz in a Catholic Church-run college in Kerala’s Muvattupuzha to refrain from making such demands, reminding them that it is forbidden in Islam to force someone to observe religious duties.
The organization's general secretary, Muhammed Thoufeeq Moulavi, described the situation as unfortunate and discouraged students from making demands that could incite hatred. He highlighted that Islam does not sanction praying in places obtained through coercion, urging for community dialogue instead of confrontation.
Students’ protest at Nirmala College has sparked significant controversy after some students demanded a designated room for offering namaz. The protest, led by a group of girls, was met with firm resistance from the college management, who advised the students to use a nearby mosque, located approximately 200 meters from the campus, for their prayers.
The controversy stems from an incident of some Muslim girls who had offered Namaz at a resting place allotted to them, which was noticed by one of the non-teaching staff at the college, who insisted they should not be allowed to pray at the college. The matter later reached the Principal, who told students not to indulge in religious practices inside the campus. After this, the students demanded a place for them to offer Namaz, which was declined by the Principal, leading students to protest against the decision of the college.
The college, managed by the Catholic Church, maintained its stance, emphasizing the impracticality of accommodating the students' requests. The principal, Father Francis Kannadan, reiterated that while the demand was considered, it could not be fulfilled and urged for an end to the controversy to prevent communal discord.
The Youth League, the youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League, echoed similar sentiments, advising students to avoid actions that might disturb societal harmony. They emphasized the importance of addressing such issues through peaceful discussion rather than public protests.
The controversy also drew political reactions, with BJP state president K Surendran alleging that extremist elements were attempting to create unrest in educational institutions managed by Hindus and Christians. This statement added to the communal tensions surrounding the issue.
Community leaders called for calm and expressed readiness to engage in discussions with the Church to find a peaceful resolution. They emphasized the need to avoid statements or actions that could exacerbate communal tensions, advocating for a harmonious and respectful dialogue to address the students' concerns.
