Maala Parvathi quits AMMA's internal probe panel for no action against Vijay Babu

Actress Maala Parvathi has resigned from the internal complaints committee of A.M.M.A (Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes) after the association's inaction against Vijay Babu, an actor, and producer who has been accused of raping a woman actor.

As per a report by The News Minute, the actor sent her resignation on the morning of Monday, May 2, but will continue to be a member of A.M.M.A.

In her resignation, the actor wrote that the executive body in its release maintained that Babu himself has decided to stay away from the association, but did not mention that AMMA has demanded action against him.

Parvathy noted that it is not tantamount to disciplinary action if Babu himself steps back from the association and that it will send a wrong signal to the public.

The actor further added that constituting an Internal Complaints Committee was for compliance with the law, and was useful to build confidence in women.

However, she noted that it is not just a grievance redressal committee, but has to implement policies to prevent harassment and recommend actions to be taken.

The actor in the letter feared if she could deliver her responsibilities as per her conscience, while noting that being a committee member is a huge responsibility and it can only be done if the committee is autonomous.

According to sources, the IC had recommended on April 27 evening that Vijay Babu should be asked to step down. At a meeting of the A.M.M.A Executive Committee held on the evening of Sunday, May 1, the matter was discussed.

By the end of the meeting, the association sent out a press release, saying that Vijay Babu has offered to stay away from the executive committee until he is proven innocent and his decision has been accepted.
