Kochi: A 22-year-old student at the St Thomas College in Pala in Kottayam district of Kerala has died from an injury her classmate allegedly inflicted on her neck after a supplementary examination at the college on Friday morning.
The victim Nithinamol is reported to have suffered throat slitting with a blade by her classmate Abhishek Baiju when she stepped out of the examination hall. Though the reason for the attack is yet to be clear, reports suggest that she had refused Abhishek's romantic advances.
A security-guard at the college, who was an eye-witness to the attack, said that he had seen that both were engaging in a verbal spat by the side of the drive-way inside the campus. "And then in a quick flash, I saw him forcing her down on the ground, holding her throat. I didn't see the blade, but I could see blood spilling seconds later. Immediately, I phoned the principal, informing him of the attack," The Indian Express quoted the security guard as saying.
The attacker was found sitting calm near the body, wiping his hands off the blood after the incident till the police came, the guard said. The accused has reportedly told the police he slit her throat with a paper cutter.
Nithinamol, who lost a lot of blood on the spot of the attack, was rushed by fellow students and onlookers to the nearby hospital, but she succumbed to injuries. The accused was apprehended very soon.
Nithinamol was taken to a nearby hospital by friends and onlookers but the loss of more blood in the attack expedited her death.
While Nithinamol was a native of Thalayolaparambu, Abhishek is from Koothattukulam in the neighbouring Ernakulam district. Both were final-year students of B.Voc degree course in Food Processing Technology at the college.
