National Population Register: officials start works

Thiruvananthapuram: It seems officials responsible for census have started their works as regards NPR, if letter by Thamaraseri Thahasildar directing officials in this regard were any indication.

In the letter dispatched seeking officials for census has mentioned NPR as well, putting the government on the defense, and subsequently the government said that action would be taken against officials proceeding with NPR.

The letter by Thahsildar came much as Chief Minister reiterated that NPR wouldn’t be implemented in the state.

The Thahsildar, who is in-charge census officer, sent a letter to headmasters and principals on January 13.

The letter seeking details of teachers for appointing as enumerators and supervisors for census clearly mentioned NPR.

In the first phase of census list of houses would be made alongside renewal of NPR, the letter said while directing to submit details of teachers in form by January 22. As it kicked up controversy, the letter was withdrawn.

The Oppostion came down heavily on the chief minister calling his assurance a lie. Following this, principal secretary Department of General Administration K R Jyothilal informed district collectors that all works regarding NPR are stayed.

Actions would be taken against officials proceeding with NPR, his message reportedly said.
