Piling up assets causes church dispute: HC

Kochi: Kerala High Court today opined that piling up of immeasurable assets causes disputes among Christian churches. Justices PD Rajan and TV Anilkumar verbally said that issues will be solved if the government appoints a receiver to take an account of assets owned by church and take them over.  The court made the observation while considering a plea for transferring a dispute case to a church court.

A commission shall be appointed to assess the church assets.  If the parties are unable to reach  a consensus, the government should be asked to take over the church.

The Chief Secretary should appoint a receiver to assess the properties of church.  The believers shall retain the right to prayer in the churches, the court said.

The plea was deferred for later hearing.
