Week-long interstate bus strike called off

Thiruvananthapuram:  The week-long strike by The Interstate Bus Owners Association (IBOA) in Kerala has been called off following their discussions with government officials here.

The strike started on June 24 protesting against hefty fines levied by Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) on private interstate buses.

Representatives of IBOA on Monday participated in a discussion with Transport Secretary and other officials of MVD.

Officials had agreed to look into the heavy fines being levied on the buses; however they would continue with  ‘Operation Night Riders’ started off after two passengers had been brutally attacked on a private bus in April.

The operation aims to monitor interstate private buses by tracking whether buses are following the rules.

Alongside monitoring ticket booking agencies, MVD has formed the round the clock squads in all districts.
