Graduation to become basic qualification for teachers

Thiruvananthapuram: In its report to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the three-member committee headed by M.A. Khader recommended post-graduation with B.Ed as qualification for teachers plying in classes from 8 to 12, and graduation plus B.Ed for teachers from class one to 7.

As for lower primary, switching of teacher qualification to graduation should not be done in a hurry.  However, the government should demand NCTE to switch the qualification to graduation scheme after ten years.

Teachers plying in classes up to seven should be through high secondary with 50 percent marks and four years of Bachelor of Elementary education, the committee suggested.

The teachers training centres in Kerala should be equipped to cope with four-year Bachelor of Elementary Education courses.

Recommendations, to be implemented in phased manner, are considerate to the existing teachers and employees.

Currently, the qualification for teachers at primary level is high secondary education plus two-year long teaching diploma ( old-time TTC).

Graduation with B.Ed is the qualification at high school level, whereas post-graduation plus B.Ed is the qualification for high secondary teachers.
