Triple talaq bill anti-democratic: Dr Asma Zahra

Kochi: The Triple talaq bill  is against Indian democracy,  Dr Asma Zahra, Chief Co-ordinator, women's wing of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) said.

Dr Zahra told mediapersons here yesterday that the Central Government has introduced a bill which is against Muslim personal law.  Although the bill claims to protect women's rights,  that is only a claim whereas it will land women in more problems.

Muslim women are not going to gain anything special from this, she said.  The bill in reality is an affront to the male and female population of Indian Muslims numbering about 20 crore.  What is the gain in imprisoning a Muslim women who makes triple talaq, she asked.  This will only lead families to further misery.

She said that all Muslim community organizations are against the bill.  There is no immediate need in these times to bring in amendments to Muslim personal law.

Dr Zara added that Muslim Women's Cell will conduct state-wide campaigns to create awareness about Sharia laws and women's rights.  The campaign will be conducted with the goal of uplifting women socially,  economically and educationally.

A toll-free number has also been opened with the aim of solving the problems faced by women.  This service will be available in seven languages:  English, Urdu, Tamil,  Malayalam,  Hindu,  Kannada and Bengali.

Complaints can be registered about marriage and family.  Callers will be offered necessary counselling and legal assistance via district centres, Dr Asma Zahra explained.
