High Court registers suo motu case over snakebite death

Kochi: The Kerala High Court Monday registered a suo motu case as regards the death of 10-year-old Shehla Sherin, following snake-bite in the classroom at the Sarvajana Government Vocational Higher Secondary School in Sultan Bathery, Wayanad.

The HC’s move came based on a letter by by Justice C K Abdul Rehim, executive chairman of the Kerala State Legal Services Authority.

The letter, based on the report of the Wayanad District Legal Services Authority, said departments like Education, Local Self-Government, Health and Child Welfare, and Police were shirking their responsibilities.

It is high time, the letter said, the executive took the needful steps, and judicial system cannot let the students be put on vulnerable situations.

Despite direction from education department, drop boxes to highlight students’ grievances are not maintained in many schools, the letter said.
