Kerala CM seeks army help as rains continue

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan has sought the army’s help in the relief and rescue operations as rains continue in the state.

In a Facebook post, CM said he had sought the army’s help and 13 more units of the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force). Meanwhile, rescuers evacuated over 8,000 people to over 122 relief camps, according to an official.

Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad, Kasargode and Idukki districts emerged as the worst affected from the rains.

Reports say, for most people the past night was a nightmare as—especially those in Meppadi of Wayanad, where close to 2000 people reportedly got stranded—the flood waters, land slip and incessant rains trapped them in a mayhem.

“The Wayanad district collector has informed me about the landslide and additional forces are being rushed to the place,” said Kerala Revenue Minister.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rains in the state till August 14. Red alerts have been issued in Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad and Kozhikode districts.

Except capital district and neighbouring Kollam, all 12 districts have been affected by rains.

Fishermen have been asked not to venture out because winds were blowing at 40-50 km per hour.

Educational institutions remain closed in 12 districts, and University examinations in all the affected districts have been postponed.

Train services on Thursday were hit after landslides and trees fallen on the tracks in several locations. The situation has not improved much, causing delay in services.
