24-hour motor vehicle strike today

Thiruvananthapuram: Vehicles including private and KSRTC buses, will stay off the roads in Kerala on Tuesday, as part of the all-India motor vehicle strike called by the All India Co-ordination Committee of Road Transport Workers Organisations.

Various transport unions have joined the strike against the proposed Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill 2017.

This is the second all-India strike being held against the promulgation of certain provisions in the amendments bill.

Along with public transport vehicles, school buses, goods carriers, autorickshaws and taxis will stay off the road.

The Mahatma Gandhi and Calicut universities have said that all examinations scheduled for Tuesday have been postponed. New dates will be announced later.

The bill seeks to bring a slew of radical reforms in the transport sector by ensuring 100 per cent e-governance, checking bogus driving licenses and vehicle thefts and slapping a heavy penalty on traffic violators among other things.
