Govt orders no-construction at landslide, mudflow-hit areas

Thiruvananthapuram: The government has decided not to give permission for building constructions in landslide and mudflow areas.

An order has been issued to the district, local self-governing bodies by chief secretary in this regard.

There are ecologically fragile areas among those where landslips occurred.  The rebuilding works have been initiated in these areas. The order instructs not to issue permission for construction activities here for now.

The order sent to district collectors, police officials and local self-government institutions urges to disprove construction activities in areas where landslides and mudflows occurred.

If any such works are seen they should be stopped, it said.

The order said that the government intends to carry out a scientific study and analysis to find out appropriate zones for construction activities in fragile and vulnerable areas.

The move comes with the aim of protecting the people from major disasters in future like the recent floods that affected Kerala.

The district collectors have been ordered to conduct mapping in the landslide-affected areas.

Scientific studies will be taken up based on this.
