Pembila Orumai activists forcefully removed, hospitalised

Munnar: The members of a women’s collective of plantation workers, who were on an indefinite fast here demanding resignation of Power Minister M M Mani over his alleged offensive remarks against women, were arrested and hospitalised Saturday.

Gomathi and Kousalya of ‘Pembila Orumai,’ an outfit of women plantation workers, were arrested and removed from the protest site after their health condition deteriorated, police said.

Later, they were admitted to a hospital here.

Tense moments prevailed in the area for a while when a group of people resisted attempts by the police to remove the duo, they said.

However, other women activists are continuing their protest.

Members of the outfit have been protesting since last week here after Mani allegedly questioned the character of the outfit’s women workers at a public function.

Opposition Congress-led UDF, BJP and Aam Aadmi Party have also lent support to the stir.

Mani, representing Udumbanchola in Idukki district made the alleged remarks, while talking about the eviction drive from encroached lands in Munnar.

Though Mani had expressed regret over his remark, the activists were demanding his resignation and a public apology.
