BJP calls Narayana Guru a great Hindu saint

Kozhikode: Days after a ‘Vamana Jayanti’ greeting by BJP national president Amit Shah on the eve of Kerala’s Onam festival invoked public criticism by many in Kerala, the party has fired another gun calling Sree Narayana Guru a great Hindu saint.

Friday marked the 162nd birth anniversary of Guru and the BJP state unit extended Jayanti greetings with a post on its official page on Facebook.

“Narayana Guru, the great Hindu saint, is a gift from Kerala to the world. He is the greatest revolutionary who revamped the Hindu Dharma by fighting against the defects in it. Kerala has not seen another greater revolutionary than Guru. He took care to not make his voice against social evils turn against his own Dharma,” reads the post.

Many have already started questioning the post that attaches Guru with Hidutwa.

Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said the efforts of the BJP to make Guru a Hindu saint were discourteous. He said the BJP was trying to spread its communal agenda in the name of Guru.

“Narayana Guru is a social reformer whose ideologies went beyond religions. The BJP’s effort to project him as just a Hindu Guru is insulting,” the Congress leader said in a Facebook post.
