UDF decides to continue fast despite MLAs getting weaker

Thiruvananthapuram: Congress-led UDF Opposition has decided to continue the indefinite fast by its three MLAs to protest against the LDF government's stand on  the private medical college issue, despite them getting weaker.

The fast by MLAs Shafi Parambil and Hibi Eden (both Congress) and Anoop Jacob (KC-J) at the foyer of the Assembly hall entered its fourth day Saturday.

As part of the ongoing agitation, the Opposition will Saturday take out marches to the Secretariat and the district headquarters. The protest at the entrance hall will continue on Saturday and Sunday even though the Assembly is on leave these days.

The LDF government, however, is unlikely to take any immediate steps to sort out the issue. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is of an opinion that the MLAs should stop the fast on their own.

Meanwhile, N A Nellikunnau and K K Abid Hussain Thangal (both IUML) replaced K M Shaji and N Shamsuddin (both IUML), who were on a sit-in dharna to express solidarity with the trio.

The Congress-led UDF Opposition had continued their agitation in the Assembly on the private medical college issue on Friday, as the government refused to reconsider its agreement with the managements on fee structure and admissions.
