Holy Ramadan begins

Kozhikode: The Islamic holy month of Ramadan began in the state on Monday.

The announcement of the beginning of one-month fast was made by clerics after the sighting of the moon in Kozhikode on Sunday evening.

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan, which can be 29 or 30 days, involves most Muslims keeping fasting from daybreak to dusk.

Ramadan ends with Eid ul-Fitr.

Muslims in Kerala constitute 88.73 lakh (41.76 lakh males and 46.97 lakh females) of the 3.30 crore population.
