Youth arrested for insulting Lt. Col. Niranjan on Facebook

Kozhikode: A youth has been arrested over an offensive Facebook post against Lt. Col. E.K. Niranjan of the National Security Guard, who was killed in the counter-offensive against terrorists at the Pathankot air base.

Chevayur police detained 24-year-old Anwar from his home at Chemmenkadavu in Malappuram around 2 am on Tuesday following a complaint filed by the management of Madhyamam Daily as the youth appeared on Facebook as an employee of Madhyamam. The police have recorded his arrest.

The Madhyamam management had clarified that he was not an employee of the Daily.

He had posted an insulting comment below a news story about the death of Lt. Col. E.K. Niranjan on a web portal. His Facebook profile said he was an employee of Madhyamam. Some of the online portals and people on social media used this against the Daily following which the management approached the police.  

The youth told the police that the post was not intentional and he has no link with any organization. As per reports, sedition charges have been tapped against him.
