Sabarimala: SC asks Delhi police to give protection to lawyer

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Monday asked Delhi Police to give protection to the lawyer, who received threat calls after his NGO filed PIL seeking entry of women in Sabarimala temple.

A three member bench directed the Delhi police to take a strict action in the incident.

The court also asked the police to submit a report by February 8 on what action had taken on the lawyer’s complaint.

Meanwhile, the apex court declined the Travacore Devaswam Board’s plea to defer the case hearing.

Naushad Ahmed Khan, president of the Indian Young Lawyers Association, had filed a complaint with the police Wednesday after receiving several calls and “death threats” over a PIL seeking entry for all women and girls in Sabarimala temple.

He claimed he received “threatening calls” for “interfering” even though he was not directly involved with the case.

His complaint to the police comes two days after the Supreme Court questioned the age-old ban on entry of women of menstrual age group in Sabarimala temple.

The apex court, on January 11, had questioned the age-old tradition of banning entry of women of menstrual age group in the Kerala temple, saying this cannot be done under the Constitution.
