K V Sumesh elected as Kannur panchayat president

Kannur: CPI-M leader K V Sumesh was elected as president of Kannur district panchayat on Monday.

The election was necessitated following the resignation of Karayi Rajan from the post following his inability to carry out his duties in the wake of the High Court’s recent refusal to relax the CBI court’s bar on his entry into the district as a condition for granting bail in the Muhammad Fasal murder case.

Sumesh bagged votes of 15 members out of the total 24 members. Thomas Varghese of Congress got nine votes.

Sumesh’s name was suggested by Karayi Rajan.

He is at present DYFI district president and CPI-M district committee member.
