Govt relaxes restrictions on Fire Force services

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has relaxed the restrictions put on Fire Force services by its former DGP Jacob Thomas following the Adoor IHRD engineering college incident.

The addition secretary of the state home department issued the new order stating that the Fire Force personnel should extend their services whenever required – if it's to rescue a cattle that fell into a well or to clear the road by removing a fallen tree.

It also said that the facilities of Fire Force can be used for private use too by collecting a fee from the private parties.

After the over-the-top Onam celebrations by students of Adoor IHRD engineering college became a controversy, former DGP Jacob Thomas had issues an order directing the force to stop catering to private events.

A group of Onam revellers had climbed on top of a Fire Engine Unit and drove inside the College campus run by IHRD at Adoor. They even pumped water onto students to enable them to dance in the shower.

The incident sparked protests from various quarters and it was also alleged that the Fire Engine Unit was rented out to students without following guidelines and norms.
