Complete road works before Sabarimala season, HC directs

Kochi: The High Court Thursday told the central and state governments to ensure that maintenance and construction of bridges and roads in the state be completed before commencement of Sabarimala pilgrim season.

A division bench of the High Court headed by Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan directed National Highway Authorities of India (NHAI) and state government agencies, including PWD, to commence and complete the maintenance of entire road network and bridges in Kerala before the first week of November every year.

Considering the periodical report of the Sabarimala Special Commissioner, the bench clarified that the order will be applicable to future years also.

The Court also clarified that granting administrative sanction is obligatory on the government to ensure compliance of court direction at least three months before commencement of the pilgrim season.

State police chief, Road Safety Commissioner, PWD Chief Engineer and NHAI are directed to ensure compliance of the direction.

The HC warned that declaration of civic election and administrative sanction shall not affect carrying out of its directions.
