Roopesh, Shyna charged under UAPA

Kochi: Maoist leaders Roopesh and his wife Shyna were remanded in judicial custody till June 3 by the CBI court in Kochi on Thursday.

They have been charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for the 2008 case in which they had helped a top CPI(Maoist) leader from Andhra Pradesh, Malla Raja Reddy and his wife Suguna and let them stay in their house in Perumbavoor.

Roopesh and Shyna have at least 20 cases against them in Kerala.

They will also be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Madikeri on May 25 and before the Thalassery Sessions Court on May 26.

Roopesh, along with his wife, Shyna, besides three others Anup, Veeramani and Kannan were arrested on May 4  at Karumathampatti in Coimbatore.

They were having tea at a bakery when they were apprehended in a joint operation by police from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
