SC verdict will affect cyber cases: Chennithala

Thiruvananthapuram: Reacting to the Supreme Court verdict on Section 66(A) of the IT Act, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala Tuesday has said there are several cases in Kerala registered under the law and the court decision will affect them.

“The government will seek legal advice of the Advocate General on how to proceed further in these cases,” Chennithala told reporters.

He also said there was concern that it might encourage cyber related crimes.

“The cyber law was brought with a view to effectively check cyber crimes,” he said, adding “we have to look into the ramifications of the (court) order.”

In a landmark judgement upholding freedom of expression, the apex court Tuesday struck down the section which provides the power to arrest a person for posting allegedly “offensive” content on websites.
