Governor wants action against unruly legislators

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor P. Sathasivam has expressed deep anguish over the ruckus in the Kerala Assembly on Friday when Finance Minister K.M. Mani presented the budget and has sought action against the unruly legislators.

The Assembly witnessed unruly scenes on Friday as members of the Left opposition broke the Speaker's chair and the electronic equipment to register their protests against Mani's presenting the budget.

In a press release issued here on Saturday, he said from the report of the secretary of the assembly, letter given by the speaker and other materials like videos and media reports brought to his attention, it was clear that pandemonium broke out in the floor of the assembly due to the protest of the opposition against Mani.

"The happenings in the floor of the assembly on Friday may even justify submission of a report by the governor to the president of India under Article 356 of the constitution of India,” the statement said.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy met Governor P Sadasivam to discuss about the incidents that rocked the Kerala Assembly on Friday. Speaker N Shakthan also accompanied him.
