Govt to continue crackdown on illegal moneylenders

Thiruvananthapuram: Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Monday said that the government would move ahead with its action against gangs involved in illegal money lending activities.

“As a continuation of the government’s crackdown on gangs involved in unauthorised money lending activity, the second phase of Operation Kubera will be launched on Monday. The investigation team will work under the DGP,” Chennithala told the media here.

The police will conduct raids across the State to control illegal moneylenders. People should be ready to inform the police about such gangs. Action will be taken against them immediately, if a complaint is filed, the minister said.

He had on Sunday visited the house of Angadan, a retired government employee, who is said to have committed suicide on Friday night, unable to bear threat from money lenders and their gangs.

A gang is understood to have threatened him of dire consequences in case of failure in returning the borrowed money with interest.
