Kerala trawling ban from midnight today

Kozhikode: The annual monsoon trawling ban for 47 days on Kerala coast would start from June 14 midnight.

The ban would be effected along the Kerala coast up to 12 nautical miles.

Monsoon being the spawning season for a large variety of fish, particularly shrimp, the annual trawling restriction was first introduced in Kerala in 1988 as a conservation measure.

Since then it has been a routine annual affair.

During the ban period, trawlers and mechanised boats are not allowed to enter the area demarcated by the government.
