IB had warned of terror attack on Mullaperiyar dam: Chandy

New Delhi: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Friday confirmed that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) had submitted a report stating that the Mullaperiyar dam was facing terror threats.

“There was a report stating that the Mullaperiyar dam was facing terror threats. The Intelligence Bureau (IB) prepared the report without consulting the state government. Kerala government has written a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh conveying the state's displeasure over it,” Chandy said.

The Chief Minister also said the security measures at the dam will be beefed up irrespective of the matter's veracity.

Earlier in the day, the Tamil Nadu government claimed in the Supreme Court that the Mullaperiyar dam was vulnerable to a serious terror threat and should be guarded by central paramilitary forces.

The apex court then issued notice to Kerala government based on Tamil Nadu's plea that the central force be deployed for the security of the dam.

The dam is maintained by the Tamil Nadu government but the dam's security is with the Kerala Police and Tamil Nadu pays for it.
