HC declines to interfere in PILs against Shariah

Kochi: The High Court Thursday declined to interfere in a PIL against the Shariah practise regarding inheritance right of Muslim women.

Three organisations had filed PILs in the High Court in 2008 complaining discrimination on the ground of sex in the matter of inheritance of property by women in Muslim community.

According to the petitioners, a girl child does not get equal share in property as a son.

Dismissing the petitions, the High Court bench, consisting Chief Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice A M Shaffique, said the issues cannot be adjudicated in PIL.

It is for the legislature to consider the issues raised by the petitioners and frame competent legislations, the bench said.
