Child beggary: 30 taken into custody in Kottakkal

Kottakkal: Around 30 persons of a gang have been taken into custody here for using children for begging.

The gang, from the state of Andhra Pradesh, was nabbed by the police following a tip-off from the district Child Protection Unit early morning Wednesday. The police also rescued 12 children from the gang.

The gang, camped at Puthuparamba at Edarikode near here, had been indulged in begging in the surrounding mosques and Muslim homes using children. The Child Protection Unit sought help of the police following a complaint from the locals.

The children, who were more than 4 years old, were being used for the purpose to make use of the Muslims’ mentality to give more donations in the holy month of Ramadan.

The police suspect the gang brought in children from other states as well.
