CPI-M worker hacked to death, 6-hour hartal in Kannur

Kannur: CPI-M has called for a 6-hour hartal in Kannur district on Thursday to protest the murder of one of its workers allegedly by BJP-RSS activists.

Vazhayil Veetil Preman (45), a toddy tapping employee, was attacked Wednesday night by a gang at Chittariparamba, Koothuparamba near here. He was admitted to Thalassery Sahakarana Hospital where he succumbed to injuries early morning Thursday.

The hartal will be observed from 2 pm to 6 pm.

There have been minor incidents of attacks on both CPI-M and BJP local offices for the last three weeks in the district.

On Wednesday, some miscreants on five motorbikes, allegedly BJP-RSS workers, hurled country bombs at the CPI-M area committee office in Chackarakal destroying a TV set, furniture and the compound wall. The assailants attacked some workers sleeping inside the office injuring two of them.

In another incident the same day, suspected to be a retaliatory attack, BJP's Chembiladu panchayat president C P Ranjith was attacked allegedly by CPI-M workers at Muthukutti town when he was waiting to board a bus.

Prohibitory orders have been clamped for 10 days in four panchayat limits in the district.
