Mullaperiyar water level at 141.6 feet; one more spillway shutter closed

Kumali: As the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam has come down to 141.6 feet, the Tamil Nadu authorities closed the second spillway shutter on Thursday morning.

On Tuesday, three spillway shutters of the dam were opened after the water level touched the legally permitted 142 feet. However, the authorities closed one of the shutters Wednesday morning as the water came down to 141.7 ft.

The Tamil Nadu authorities had assured the Idukki collector that they would bring down the water level to 141 ft. However, with just one shutter remaining open now, it is unlikely to happen as the water-inflow into the dam has not reduced.

The 112-year-old dam, located in Kerala on the Periyar river, is operated and managed by Tamil Nadu.

Supreme Court had on December 3 last year dismissed the Kerala government's plea seeking a review of its May 7, 2014, verdict holding the dam to be safe and allowing Tamil Nadu to raise the water level to 142 feet and ultimately to 152 feet after completion of strengthening measures.
