Won't delay local body polls at any cost: Chandy

Kochi: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Monday said the local body elections would not be delayed at any cost.

"The newly-made delimitation of wards should be implemented if the court permits. A high-level meeting will be held with the Election Commission tomorrow (Tuesday) and the government will provide them with all facilities they need," Chandy said.

There were media reports that delay in completing ward delimitation was likely to upset the local self-government institutions (LSGIs) scheduled in October.

The High Court verdict had last week struck down the State government’s order on delinking wards of Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode Corporations to carve out new municipalities.

Polls are scheduled to be held for 21,682 seats in the three-tier local body structure in the state and 50 percent of the seats are reserved for women candidates.
