Jilted lover who attempted to mow down woman arrested

Thrissur: A 21-year-old man who was absconding after trying to mow down a woman at Arimbur here for allegedly spurning his love was arrested Thursday along with his father from the temple town of Palani in Tamil Nadu.

Shebin and his father, absconding soon after the incident on April 14, were taken into custody from a lodge in Palani and brought here this morning, police said.

A case under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) has been registered against the youth, while his father has been charged with helping him escape and destroying evidence, police said.

Shebin, alleged to be a drug addict, had dragged the woman, a B.Com student, into his car as she was returning from a temple, and tried to stab her with a knife and glass piece, police said.

She, however, managed to run out when the youth rammed the car against her, causing multiple injuries. The woman has been admitted to a private hospital here.

Hearing her cries, some people nearby, including women, rushed to her help when they were also knocked down, resulting in serious injuries to two of them.

The accused had abandoned his car soon after the incident and was absconding along with his father.

Police said at least 30 relatives of the accused have been questioned since the incident took place. The father-son duo were nabbed with the help of cyber cell by tracking their mobile location.

The incident has sent shock waves as it comes close on the heels of the ramming of a luxury car by a business tycoon on a security guard of a luxury apartment here causing the death of the guard.
