Kid-in-kennel row: Closed school reopened

Thiruvananthapuram: Jawahar English Medium School at Kudappanakkunnu here, that was closed down in the wake of the infamous ‘kid-in-kennel’ episode, was re-opened on Thursday.

The Students and parents reached at the school by 9 am. Police personnel were deployed at the premises as a section of the parents and the locals protested against the reopening. The agitators also took out a demonstration to the institute.

The government had earlier given the nod for re-opening the institution in the wake of mounting protests from parents and students.

Acting on the request of parents of nearly 110 out of the 123 students, the district administration had also recommended to the Education Department that the school be re-opened.

Three of the students had, in the meantime, joined other institutes following the kennel row.

The DPI allowed the school to function after receiving an application from the school management seeking its reopening.

Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb said that the demand of the management was approved as closing down the institute amid an academic year would affect the education of the students.

The minister added that he had asked the management to complete the proceedings to get a government approval before the next academic year. “The government will not allow it to function if they don’t get an NOC by next academic year”.
