Total liquor ban impractical, says Vellappally

Alappuzha: SNDP general secretary Vellappally Natesan Friday took a jibe at the Congress led UDF government for its newly announced liquor policy, saying that total ban on liquor is impractical in Kerala.

“If the government’s policy is total liquor prohibition, wines should also be banned in the state. The churches should be prevented from offering wines,” Vellappally told reporters here.

“It is Chief Minister Oommen Chandy who scored the goal by announcing the liquor policy and KPCC president V M Sudheeran was unable to score. The time will prove if the goal scored by Chandy was a foul or not,” he said.

“The liquor policy announced by the Chief Minister is of the UDF’s stand. Let the government convey its stand on the issue in the High Court,” he said.

The ruling UDF Thursday decided to go for a total prohibition in the state as part of which it has been decided to close down all the bars.

The license of 312 bars which are functioning now will not be renewed after March 31, 2015. From April 1, 2015, the government will give bar license only for 5-star hotels which will mean that all the 3-star and 4-star hotels will lose bar license.
