New York: India's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj said terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remains a global challenge. Only a unified and zero-tolerance approach can defeat it.
She was speaking at a meeting over Iraq. "As the government of the people of Iraq continues their fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL). It is also critical to fighting the impunity of terror globally."
The Indian envoy spoke of the 26/11 attack and noted that India believes in the credibility of the collective fight against terrorism. "It can be strengthened only when we can ensure accountability for the grave and inhuman acts of terror committed by terrorists and take strong measures against those who encourage support and finance terrorism," reported ANI.
The UN news reported that the key focus of the UN investigative team in Iraq remains to provide justice for the communities impacted by the ISIL terror network. Special Adviser Christian Ritscher said there is evidence to substantiate the crimes committed against Christians such as enslavement and forced conversion. The report also speaks of the development and use of chemical and biological weapons as well as the destruction of intentionally protected cultural heritage sites.
His team is also working on the excavation of ISIL-related mass graves. UNITAD and Germany are working on collecting data and using DNA references in the Yazidi community to identify human remains. This will allow survivors to mourn their loved ones.
"As part of this programme, psychosocial support training is provided to Iraqi authorities to ensure international best practice is maintained when dealing with victims and survivors," reported UN news.
