Mumbai: An employee of Islamic Research Foundation, headed by Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik, has been acquitted of charges that he was party to inducing a man from Kasargod and his family to join Islamic State (IS).
Mumbai-based Islamic scholar and preacher, Dr Zakir Naik is currently resident in Malaysia and faces charges in India including economic offences related to his organisation.
Arshi Qureshi, who was accused of the offence, was acquitted by the Special Court of National Investigation Agency.
The case is related to the departure from India by 22 people including one Ashfaq from Kasargod with the alleged intention of joining IS.
Ashfaq left the country with his wife and a one-year old daughter. Following this, his father Abdul Majeed, who was running a lodging house in Mumbai, filed a complaint against IRF.
Another accused, Imam Mohammed Majeed hailing from Wayanad in Kerala, who had been arrested, was discharged from the case. Abdul Majeed obtained discharge after he revealed later that he had filed the complaint against Haneef under coercion by the police.
