UP cop enters mosque wearing shoes during prayers, cuts loudspeaker wire

Lucknow: A police constable from Cantonment Police Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow has been accused of entering a mosque with his shoes during Friday prayers on April 10 and cutting the loudspeaker wire over alleged violation of Supreme Court guidelines on noise levels.

Videos circulating on social media show the constable, whose identity has not been disclosed by Uttar Pradesh Police, on his patrol bike surrounded by a group of Muslim men who accused him of hooliganism and intimidation.

According to worshippers, the officer entered the mosque wearing shoes while prayers were underway and disconnected the loudspeaker wiring for “failing to maintain Supreme Court orders on noise levels.”

The constable was confronted by locals, who questioned his actions, saying the mosque is a place of worship and alleging he acted without permission. Heated exchanges followed, with residents accusing him of “hooliganism” and stopping prayers, while the officer reportedly called for reinforcement.

The officer, however, denied the allegations and claimed he was being intimidated.

A senior police officer later arrived at the scene, where tensions escalated again as both sides presented conflicting accounts. Some locals alleged the constable also made a threatening remark, which police have denied.

The Cantonment Station House Officer said the constable was on patrol when he heard loud sound from the mosque loudspeaker, which was allegedly above permissible limits set by the Supreme Court. She clarified that the situation was later resolved after discussions with the mosque committee.

“This is not true. Nothing like this happened,” she said, rejecting claims that the officer entered the mosque with shoes or acted inside the premises.

The police further stated that a meeting was held with the mosque committee and the matter has been resolved amicably. The Lucknow Police Media Cell also dismissed the allegations as false, saying peace and order have been restored.

In an official statement on X, police said senior officers intervened due to the sensitivity of the situation and held discussions with those involved. The mosque’s Mutawalli reportedly assured that noise control measures would be followed in accordance with prescribed standards going forward.
